Nobody likes working but becoming unemployed is not the answer. Unemployment has traditionally been a poverty trap and cause for public shaming in a country that also rates bludging as a legitimate pastime.

Jeff Borland is Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne. He spends a lot of time looking at the labour markets and can speak with authority about the usefulness of schemes like 'work for the dole' and job application quotas.
